But they didn't just appear out of nowhere. The story of the QR code is a fascinating tale of frustration, innovation, and an ancient board game.

The Problem with the Classic Barcode

To understand the birth of the QR code, we have to travel back to Japan in the early 1990s. At the time, the manufacturing industry was booming, especially the automotive sector. Factories were using traditional 1D barcodes (the ones with vertical lines you still see on supermarket products) to track car parts.

However, traditional barcodes had a massive limitation: they could only hold about 20 alphanumeric characters of information. As car manufacturing became more complex, factories had to stick up to ten different barcodes on a single car part just to store enough data. Workers were exhausted from having to scan parts multiple times, and the scanners were notoriously slow and required a perfect angle to work.

The industry desperately needed a barcode that could hold more data and be scanned much faster.

Inspiration from an Ancient Game

Enter Masahiro Hara, an engineer working for Denso Wave (a subsidiary of Toyota) in 1994. Tasked with solving this massive industrial problem, Hara spent his days brainstorming a new, two-dimensional (2D) code.

The breakthrough came to him during his lunch break while playing Go, an ancient strategy board game played with black and white stones on a grid. Hara realized that by arranging data in a 2D grid instead of a 1D line, a code could store information both horizontally and vertically. This genius leap meant a single 2D code could hold over 4,000 alphanumeric characters—hundreds of times more than a standard barcode!

But there was still a challenge: Speed. How could a scanner instantly recognize this code among other text or images on a box?

Hara spent months analyzing printed materials—magazines, flyers, and boxes—looking for a specific ratio of black and white that rarely occurred in nature or human text. He discovered the ratio 1:1:3:1:1. He used this ratio to design the three distinct squares you see in the corners of every QR code. These "Position Detection Patterns" act like lighthouses. They allow a camera to instantly figure out where the code is, how big it is, and what angle it is tilted at.

Thanks to this, the "Quick Response" code was born. It could be scanned in a fraction of a second from any direction.

The Global Explosion

For the first decade, QR codes remained largely confined to the industrial and logistics sectors. Their first real taste of public popularity came from Japan and later China, where apps like WeChat and Alipay integrated QR codes to revolutionize mobile payments in the 2010s.

However, for the rest of the world, QR codes were often seen as a marketing gimmick. You needed to download a special third-party app just to scan them, which most people couldn't be bothered to do.

Then came the turning point: Apple and Google integrated native QR code scanners directly into their default smartphone cameras. Suddenly, billions of people had a scanner right in their pocket. But the true catalyst for the global explosion was the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The sudden, desperate need for "touchless" interactions—like digital restaurant menus, contactless payments, and health tracking—transformed the QR code from a neat trick into a daily survival tool.
