Development Notice: Please be advised that "Among the Impostor" is currently in its early testing and development phase. As this is not a finalized release, players should expect that many features may not function perfectly yet. Bugs, unexpected behaviors, and incomplete mechanics are to be expected during gameplay.

Overview

"Among the Impostor" is an audio-first social deduction game built specifically from the ground up for blind and visually impaired players. Inspired by the 2018 game "Among Us," this project completely removes the need for a visual interface. Instead, the entire environment is navigated through keyboard shortcuts, and all critical game information is delivered via your preferred screen reader and spatial audio cues.

Gameplay & Roles

At the start of each round, players are secretly divided into two opposing factions:

  • Crewmates: The primary objective of the Crewmates is to survive and complete a list of assigned tasks scattered across the map. Crewmates must use their hearing and deduction skills to observe player movements, share information during meetings, and vote out the hidden traitors.
  • Impostors: The Impostors must eliminate the Crewmates without being caught. They are equipped with the ability to kill, use hidden vents to travel quickly across the map, and trigger critical sabotages (such as depleting the oxygen or disabling communications) to create chaos and separate the Crewmates.

Key Features & Existing Systems

  • Audio-Spatial Environment: The game map operates as a three-dimensional audio space. Players can identify wall materials by bumping into them, track approaching footsteps, and hear directional sound cues like vent usage or nearby eliminations.
  • Screen-Reader Integration: Designed primarily for NVDA, the game hooks directly into Windows application output. Every room change, meeting phase, and player action is announced automatically via text-to-speech without requiring tedious menu navigation.
  • Interactive Tasks & Minigames: Tasks require physical navigation to specific coordinates. We have implemented several unique auditory minigames for both regular tasks and sabotages. Players will find themselves downloading data, cleaning O2 filters, overriding reactors, and memorizing pitch sequences in auditory "Simon Says" challenges. Each task relies entirely on sound cues, timing, and keyboard inputs.
  • Sabotage Mechanics: Impostors can disrupt the ship by cutting the lights (reducing hearing distance), disabling communications (blocking the radio), or triggering lethal emergencies like O2 depletion and Reactor meltdowns that require Crewmates to work together quickly to fix.
  • Social & Account Systems: The game features a full online backend including player registration, secure login, a friends list, and real-time private messaging. You can easily see when your friends are online and invite them to your lobby.
  • Automated Bot Support: To ensure games can always start, lobbies with fewer than four human players will automatically fill the remaining slots with computer-controlled bots that can navigate, perform tasks, kill, and participate in meetings.

Future Roadmap & Development Direction

The game is constantly evolving. In the future, we plan to implement:

  • Built-in Voice Chat: Direct in-game voice communication where players' voices fade with distance and are directionally panned, eliminating the need for external apps like Discord.
  • Advanced Roles: Introducing new dynamics such as the Engineer (can use vents), Scientist (can check vitals remotely), and Shapeshifter (can disguise as others) to deepen the gameplay strategy.
  • Custom Keybinds: Allowing players to remap all controls to fit their personal keyboard preferences.
  • More Minigames & Maps: Expanding the universe with additional maps (like Mira HQ and Polus) and brand new audio-based tasks (e.g., Swipe Card, Fix Wiring).

System Requirements & Controls

  • Operating System: Windows
  • Input: Standard Keyboard. The game is driven entirely by single-key shortcuts. Movement is handled via W, A, S, D, while dedicated keys manage actions such as interacting (E), reporting (R), killing (Q), accessing sabotages (X), and checking tasks (Shift+T).

Beta Testing Application & Download

At this current stage of development, the game is operating under a Closed Beta. This means the installation files are not publicly available for download. Only users who have been explicitly approved as beta testers will receive the download link and the necessary credentials to access the game server.

If you are interested in trying your luck and joining the testing team, you can apply by submitting a ticket and answering a few questions about your gaming experience and availability.

Why is it closed? We want to emphasize that our goal is not to exclude anyone or keep the game hidden. However, because the game is still highly experimental and prone to breaking, we need a small group of committed, consistent, and patient individuals. We rely heavily on beta testers who are willing to regularly report bugs, provide high-quality feedback, and help us thoroughly test specific mechanics without getting frustrated by the game's incomplete state. Once the core systems are stable, we look forward to opening the game up to everyone!

Application Questions

To apply, please send us a ticket here answering the following three questions. We are a small, passionate team developing this project specifically for the visually impaired community. We need testers who are totally blind or visually impaired, highly familiar with audio-based gaming, and capable of adapting quickly to new, unpolished mechanics.

  1. Your Audio Gaming Experience: Are you a visually impaired player, and what audio games have you played previously? We need testers who are comfortable navigating 3D audio spaces and using screen readers (Currently only works with NVDA) seamlessly during gameplay.
  2. Bug Reporting & Communication: Are you comfortable encountering game-breaking bugs and reporting them clearly to the developers? Describe a time when you helped test a project or how you would explain a technical issue you encounter.
  3. Commitment & Consistency: Developing this game requires a lot of trial and error. Can you commit to playing the game consistently and participating in scheduled testing sessions with other beta testers, even when the game is incomplete?
